Celebrate

unnamed (1)

Classic family moment, no? This is me {on the right} and my sister Michelle, who is celebrating 32 years today. I find this rather daunting  as I still remember the day she was born as if it were yesterday. I’ve mentioned this before in this post, but truth be told, I was hoping this little sibling of mine would be a brother. But I have to say, how happy I am that she is my little sister. Although we have had our disagreements {oddly enough, the photo above was not one of them} I am quite proud to be her big sister.

Michelle was never one to fit any mold. She decided to live abroad her junior year of high school and ended up in Nitra, Slovakia. If it were me, I would have been home within 24 hours. But not Michelle. She is one to face any challenge and do so gracefully. After high school, she took a little time off and lived in England, where she decided to apply to the American University in Paris to finish her studies. She has inspired my love of travel and I only wish I was half as creative as she is. Really. You have to check out her Instagram account Letters From Nantucket. What an inspiration!

So here is to my little sister. Keep being you, as you are pretty awesome!

Fall Edit

unnamed (1)

Although the temperatures are near 80 degrees in Boston today { I’m not complaining}, I’m having that ‘back to school’ urge for a few new fall pieces. I use to love back-to-school shopping. My best friend Meghan and I would fly over on her father’s company plane {trust me, it’s not as glamorous as it sounds} and spend the morning and early afternoon at the Cape Cod Mall. Let’s be honest. I really would just be at the Gap deciding just how many things I could get with my modest budget of summer babysitting/bakery counter girl earnings. Those were most certainly the days!

I have a few rules to help keep my closet in-check: 1) if I haven’t worn an item within the last year, it’s time to donate and 2) for every new piece that comes in, one needs to be retired.

A few pieces I just don’t think I can live without:

  • This vest from Club Monaco. I am just so in-love with it.
  • These boots from Loeffler Randall. I am long overdue for a new go-to pair and I think these may just be the winner.
  • This cape.
  • And I am in desperate need for a new coat but haven’t found the right one just yet. Any suggestions?

Let me know what’s on your fall wish list!

Tuesday Travel

unnamed (4)

As promised, today I am excited to share all the details from the first stop of our European tour… Brussels. Home to the European Union, TinTin, nearly 400 Embassies, and a beer hall with over 2,000 beers, Brussels certainly does have lots to offer. And while many suggested we skip Brussels and head right to Bruges, I am happy we decided to kick off the first two days of our vacation here. So without further adieu, here are my Brussels must-do’s.

Stay

01-27-15-wanderlust-hotel-des-galeries-61

Hotel Des Galeries. My most favorite hotel ever. The location, the decor, the pillows. Located around the corner from the Galeries Royales Saint Hubert, this picture perfect hotel is close to everything you will want to see in Brussels including the Grand-Place and Manneken-Pis. And although I was a bit worried when I saw just how close we were to the Grand-Place, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the rooms were. The bathrooms are breathtaking and are stocked with my favorite Malin + Goetz products. And, Comptoir des Galeries, owned by French chef Julien Burlat, is connected to the hotel and serves the most delicious continental breakfast.

Note: This photo was not our room but sadly my photo was a bit too dark due to the grey weather we encountered. These photos are from the hotel website.

Eat

unnamed (1)

The first thing K asked upon our arrival was “what do you want to do?” To which I replied, “I want to eat a Belgian waffle!” Fortunately, the Gaufre de Bruxelles was around the corner from our hotel and let me tell you they have the best waffle EVER. Although there were cheaper options outside of the main square, these were euros well spent!

For those who know my girl well, they know she loves her beer so of course we had to find a spot to enjoy a traditional Belgian brew.

Across from the Manneken-Pis is an eclectic bar Poechenellekelder, filled with treasures and beer paraphernalia where I tried my first sugar beer. Quite tasty if I do say. After we finished the first {of many} beers, we decided to head to The Delirium Cafe {thankfully a stones through away from our hotel) to dive into their menu of over 2,000 beers. My girl was in heaven!

With a slight buzz and a bit of jet lag kicking in, we decided to enjoy a traditional meals of moules frites {mussels and fries}. Rick Steves was our trusted guide {or rather his book} and he suggested the touristy yet fun Chez Leon. We started with a simple tomato salad and then enjoyed a big old pot of mussels in white wine broth with shallots and garlic. So good and they provide plenty of bread to soak up all the broth.

While touring around the Sablon neighborhood on our second day, we stumbled upon a delightful delicatessen shop Claire Fontaine that had the most beautiful prepared lunches and decided to grab a few bites to enjoy at their little tables outside {three in total}. I highly recommend visiting this little shop, if even just to enjoy the smells.

Sadly, our dinner recommendation for our final night was a bit disappointing {Lola} but some places I had on the list that we didn’t get to try include: Les Filles and Mammouth.

Do + See

unnamed (5)

One of the main reasons why K and I decided to keep Brussels on the itinerary was purely driven by our vices… she loves beer and I love chocolate and thus many of the things we did involved finding good beer and tasting delicious chocolate!

At the top of our beer list was a visit to Brewery Cantillon, which began brewing in 1900 and today uses the same method for crafting their Lambic beers. Although the Lambic {sour} beer is not my thing, we learned so much about the process. Did you know that spiders keep away harmful insects as they serve as effective predators to maintain a biological equilibrium in the brewery? With that, a Lambic brewer will never destroy a cobweb and killing spiders is very much frowned upon. How cool!

As for chocolate, there are so many different places to visit. My favorites included Elisabeth, a shop that represents several local Belgian artisans. Their belief: better souls make better treats! I picked up the most delicious dark chocolate Orangette. “One of the things you should try once in your life, is the flavour waltz of chocolate and orange.” And what a waltz… these didn’t make it back to the states with me. In 1919, Mary began as a chocolate shop that is now claimed to be the favorite of the Belgian royalty. It was in this shop that I learned what makes a true Belgian praline. What sold me here was not only the flavors and variety but the packaging. Perfect for all the gifts I needed to bring home!

As for the sights to see, there aren’t too many. The Grand Place, Notre Dame du Sablon, the Royal Palace and of course the Manneken-Pis, the statue of the little boy peeing. From what I’ve read, this statue represents the freedom and joie de vivre of living in Brussels. A place where happy people eat, drink… and drink and then pee. On this particular day, he was dressed in old army gear. Some days he isn’t dressed and other days he is. Just depends on your luck!

Oh Brussels, you are certainly a place where we ate and drank quite a bit. Next time we visit, we will be sure to check out The Comic Strip Center and the Musical Instrument Museum.

Back

travel

I’m back! How have you all been? We had a most wonderful adventure in Brussels and Holland and it’s hard to believe that we were gone for nearly two weeks. During our time away, it looks like summer officially closed her doors and fall was welcomed with open arms. “I notice that Autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.” Words written by Friedrich Nietzsche. Don’t you agree that this is the season for the soul? Our trip abroad certainly nurtured my soul and I can’t wait to share all the details with you over the coming weeks. Check back tomorrow for Tuesday Travels and a recap of our times in Brussels.

Until then, I hope your week is off to a lovely start!

As promised, today I’m sharing a few highlights from our Catskills trip. The Catskills are in the midst of a major PR moment thanks to The New York Times (52 Places to Go in 2015), Vogue and Travel + Leisure naming it as the place to go in 2015. I thought it only fitting to jump on the bandwagon.

Stay

graham2

I first saw The Graham and Co. on my dear friend Abby’s Instagram feed. From her photos, I knew it was a place I needed to visit in person. For this weekend getaway, K and I decided to invite our good friends T + R to join us. R, who like me, is all about the details, had the Graham on his list as well so they quickly accepted our invite. Within the first hour, R coined Insta-graham and Co. as every detail of this former Caribbean themed motel in Phoenicia is picture perfect!

Upon check-in, we were offered an all-American bud in a can. Awesome, right? The rooms were modest in size and featured an updated cabin chic feel, with wood slat walls, an animal hide rug, a tivoli radio and a bean bag chair. My favorite room by far, though, was The Den, a reading/game room housed in a converted garage. Check out a picture of it here. The Graham has a large green behind the pool {more on that in a minute} with a badminton court and fire pit. At night, we cuddled under a blanket by the camp fire to star gaze.

Do

bikes

The Graham provides complimentary cruisers. I highly recommend taking a ride through downtown Phoenicia. I promise, it won’t take too long at all and will make you feel like a kid again, especially since there are no hand brakes on these things!

hike

Head north to Kaaterskills Falls for a beautiful {and not too strenuous} hike. A little less than 2 miles all in all and the view at the top is well worth it.

pool

Lounge by the pool. I’ve never really been one for pools but The Graham may have just changed my mind. I think the inner tube may have something to do with it. There is also a hammock near the pool. A coveted spot for sure!

Eat

Diner

Our first night, we headed north on Rt. 28 to Big Indian, home of Peekamoose Restaurant. By far, my favorite meal of the trip. Housed in an old country farmhouse, their menu changes daily to incorporate the freshest ingredients available. I enjoyed their chopped salad and ricotta gnudi {almost as good as The Spotted Pig}. My favorite part? The fire pit outside where you can roast marshmallows. A perfect after dinner treat!

After a good night’s sleep in the mountain air,  we took a quick car ride to the famous Phoenicia Diner. A classic diner worth all the hype. The breakfast skillets were delicious!

For our last night in The Catskills, we traveled to Woodstock for dinner at Cucina, which I must admit was a huge disappointment. Thank goodness, we did a little pre-game at Tinker Taco Lab. Their chorizo and potato taco hit the spot. While exploring downtown Woodstock, I noted several places we should have gone. Shindig, Garden Cafe and Yum Yum Noodle Bar.

All in all, we had a great trip {see all our vacation photos on Instagram using the #mrktvaca}. Next time, I think we’ll stay at Hotel Dylan {the band suite looks pretty amazing} as Woodstock has much more to offer than Phoenicia. And we are definitely visiting a swimming hole! A 3 hour drive from Boston and 2 hour drive from NYC, I can certainly see why The Catskills are a go-to vacation spot. Catskills vs. Hamptons, though? I have to say I’ll always take the beach!

Today

unnamed (1)

How is it that today is the last day of August? Is summer really coming to a close? After an amazing weekend on island time with family, friends, and my girl, I am very much feeling this sentiment. It doesn’t help that the next three days are going to be insane. There is a silver lining, though, as my vacation officially starts Thursday. Did I mention this? If not, please forgive me. We are off to Holland and Belgium. Have you been? If so, do share any must do’s. And as I settle into the afternoon hour(s), let’s just remember this classic:

 It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it were Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
My I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday

Be sure to check back tomorrow. I’ll be sharing highlights from our Catskills getaway.

My move back to Boston last summer was quite easy as I had very few things. You see, when I end a chapter, I tend to purge and thus beginning a new chapter means sourcing many new things. As one who loves to entertain, I knew finding the perfect dinner set would take a little time. Luckily it didn’t take as long as expected thanks to Crate and Barrel’s Hue Collection… this week’s found item.

Created by London-based designer Aaron Probyn, this contemporary porcelain collection is hand-glazed in seven soft, soothing hues. Since Ina Garten always told me {on her show, of course} to use a white dinner plate to allow the food takes center stage, I opted for a classic white dinner plate but added color with the light grey salad plate and blush bowl. I just love the mix-and-match nature of this collection. And the price point, you can’t go wrong!

Just take a look at the color options.

Looking to add a little color to your dinner table? I can’t say enough about this week’s found item. I hope you all enjoy this last week of August enjoying good food, family and friends. I’ll see you on Monday!
