And as promised, my final holiday gift guide for the week: items for the stockings hung by the fire with care.

Have a wonderful weekend, sweet readers!

Holiday Gift Guide – For the Little Ones

IMG_4173

Happy Friday, y’all! I ran into a bit of a technical difficulty yesterday so today you are getting two gift guides. The first includes gift ideas for the little ones. Enjoy!

  • The Cartographer. My nephew Tucker is all about U.S. history, presidents and state trivia. We have had many a conversation around which states I have traveled to. This map from Land of Nod will keep him entertained for hours and help him track my travels. My favorite part is all the removable landmarks and state capital names.
  •  The Conductor. My nephew Casey is still in-love with all things Thomas. Fortunately, PBS has a wonderful assortment of Thomas gifts. I’m leaning towards the personalized nightlight and backpack, as Casey starts Kindergarten next fall.
  • The Builder{s}. My nephews Oliver and Simon live in Maine so I don’t get to visit with them as much as I would like. But when I do, I think we will have hours of fun with this block set!
  • The Star.  Anyone who has seen me lately knows I’m a little obsessed with my little niece Emma. I can’t get enough of her. This year, I am giving her this star chair, which matches the shape of the chairs I gave her brother on their second Christmas’.
  • The Scholar{s}. My goddaughter Henrietta loves a good book. A few of my favorites this year that I’ll be gifting include: The Day the Crayons Came Home, Dragons Love Tacos, Rosie Revere, Engineer, and Babar and Father Christmas.
  • The Sweet One. Our next door neighbor’s daughter loves blowing bubbles. We may just leave this set on the back porch for her!

Holiday Gift Guide – For the Gents

Holiday Gift Guide - Men

Happy Wednesday and welcome to Day 2 of my holiday gift guides. As promised, today’s list is focused on all things for the men we love.

  • The Mixologist. My brother Travis knows how to make a mean cocktail. To help with his efforts, I thought this 10-in-1 bar tool would come in mighty handy.
  • The Foodie. My brother Todd, on the other hand, knows how to make some killer BBQ. His pulled pork turned this vegetarian right around. This grilling bundle will be under the tree for him.
  • The Student. My brother Connor is completing his studies and so I thought the best gift for him would be a gift card to his favorite restaurant so he could have a date night with his lady. While I shy away from gift cards, sometimes they come in handy to those with limited funds. I did give him this set a few years back. I attribute it to helping him find his lady!
  • The Techie. While I don’t really have a brother who fits this category, I’m sure many of you do and I think this leather cord organizer might just be the perfect gift for the techie in your life. Come to think about it, this would be the perfect gift for my stepfather who is brilliant but sometimes a bit scattered.
  • The Minimalist. I have never known my father to carry a wallet. He typically has his card and money in a neat fold held together by an elastic. After all these years, I finally found the gift to help him upgrade.
  • The Metro. A piece of art and bottle opener? This gift might just make it onto my list.
  • The Workaholic. Working in the legal field for 10+ years, I’ve encountered many a workaholic. Should you have one of these in your life, I think this essential kit is a great gift to help them stay organized and perhaps be able to wrap up their day a bit sooner to get home to you.

I hope this list has provided some help for gift ideas for those crazy men in your life. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing gift ideas for the little people. What fun I’ve had pulling together ideas. Can’t wait to share!

Holiday Gift Guide – For the Ladies

IMG_4170

Happy Tuesday, sweet readers! I’m excited to share the first of my holiday gift guides. First up, gift ideas for the ladies in your life. I hope this list inspires you. And remember, only 38 days till Christmas Day!

  • The Creative. My little sister Michelle, who I introduced to you all here, is certainly the creative in our family. For Christmas, I was thinking of either doing this amazing Mindful Art subscription or this incredible weaving kit.
  • The Gardner. My older sister Megan has the most incredible green thumb. I think this beautiful hanging vase would be a welcome addition to her plant collection.
  • The Mom/Homebody. My sister Marie is a busy lady with 3 little ones and a high school senior and thus I typically find her something for the house. This year, we started an annual apple picking trip with her family so when I saw these picking baskets, I knew I had found her gift. I may just need to get one for me too! This mistletoe gift box would be a lovely gift for a homebody you know too.
  • The Wanderer. Technically that’s me in my family but I have several friends who fall into this category. I’m in-love with this beach blanket that I found this past weekend at the Remodelista market. Perfect to pack for a warm winter escape.
  • The Explorer. Several of my friends will be hitting the trails this winter and this turban headband is sure to keep them warm.
  • The Entertainer. I love sourcing gifts for the entertainer. These bright tea towels would be a welcome addition to any home and I’m obsessed with this cocktail gift box, curated by Simone LeBlanc, gift giver to the stars {she really is}.
 So there you have it. My gifts for the ladies in your life. Tomorrow, please visit again as I share gift ideas for the men in your life. Can’t wait!

Thoughts

Paris

Friends, I had hoped to kick off the week with my holiday gift guides but in all honesty, it just didn’t seem right with the events of Friday night in my beloved city of Paris. In the past, I have turned to writing to work out emotions I have over events I can’t quite seem to comprehend. In this instance, though, the words are hard to find. I don’t understand why we continue to hurt each other and ourselves. I don’t understand the hatred we have for those who don’t think like us. I don’t understand how one who witnessed the horrific events of Friday night moves on. I guess, though, that is all we can do. Move on. Do better. Love harder and deeper and listen more. My religion teaches me to be compassionate to those who are different. To extend a hand of friendship. To open my heart and home to those in need. I will continue to do so and I hope you will to. Hatred and violence is not the answer.

Question: Anyone else having trouble with this whole fall back situation? I’m tired, cranky and seem to be craving two things: Halloween candy and carbs. To help curb one of these cravings, I decided to make a pot of my go-to fall risotto Monday night. Risotto tends to be a little time-consuming but this recipe all-in-all took about 45 minutes to complete. Not too bad at all. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Butternut Squash and Spinach Risotto

*slight modifications from Ina Garten’s recipe in Family Style

Ingredients

  • 3 cups diced butternut squash {time-saver: purchase pre-cut squash}
  • 2 Tbs. olive oil
  • Salt/pepper
  • 6 cups of chicken stock {I tend to use a bit more}
  • 1 Tbs. butter
  • 1 minced shallot
  • 1 1/2 cups Arborio rice
  • 1/2 cup white wine {I used chardonnay}
  • 1 tsp. saffron threads {the good stuff from Spain}
  • 1 cup freshly graded Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups fresh spinach

Directions

  1. Preheat over to 400 degrees.
  2. Toss the pre-cut squash with olive oil, salt and pepper and spread on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Roast for 30 minutes, checking at 15 minute to toss.
  3. Pour the chicken stock into a saucepan and simmer on low.
  4. While squash is roasting and stock is simmering, melt tablespoon of butter in a dutch over pan, add the minced shallot and saute till translucent. Add in the rice and allow butter/shallot mixture to coat rice and “toast” for 2-3 minutes. This brings out the nuttiness in the rice.
  5. Add the wine and cook for two minutes. Add is two ladles of stock and saffron threads. Stir and simmer till stock is absorbed. Continue this process until the rice is cooked and begin to take on a creamy texture. Typically, this takes about 6 to 8 cycles. I know it’s close when the rice takes on a creamy texture.
  6. Off the heat, stir in butternut squash, spinach and Parmesan cheese. Mix well and season to taste. For presentation, I add a bit more cheese!

Good Morning, dear readers! As you’re reading this, I will be en route to the first stop on our European vacation, Brussels. I can’t tell you how excited I am. Things will be a little quiet around here until my return on Monday, September 14. But, please do follow along with me on Instagram. Talk soon!

As promised, today I’m sharing a few highlights from our Catskills trip. The Catskills are in the midst of a major PR moment thanks to The New York Times (52 Places to Go in 2015), Vogue and Travel + Leisure naming it as the place to go in 2015. I thought it only fitting to jump on the bandwagon.

Stay

graham2

I first saw The Graham and Co. on my dear friend Abby’s Instagram feed. From her photos, I knew it was a place I needed to visit in person. For this weekend getaway, K and I decided to invite our good friends T + R to join us. R, who like me, is all about the details, had the Graham on his list as well so they quickly accepted our invite. Within the first hour, R coined Insta-graham and Co. as every detail of this former Caribbean themed motel in Phoenicia is picture perfect!

Upon check-in, we were offered an all-American bud in a can. Awesome, right? The rooms were modest in size and featured an updated cabin chic feel, with wood slat walls, an animal hide rug, a tivoli radio and a bean bag chair. My favorite room by far, though, was The Den, a reading/game room housed in a converted garage. Check out a picture of it here. The Graham has a large green behind the pool {more on that in a minute} with a badminton court and fire pit. At night, we cuddled under a blanket by the camp fire to star gaze.

Do

bikes

The Graham provides complimentary cruisers. I highly recommend taking a ride through downtown Phoenicia. I promise, it won’t take too long at all and will make you feel like a kid again, especially since there are no hand brakes on these things!

hike

Head north to Kaaterskills Falls for a beautiful {and not too strenuous} hike. A little less than 2 miles all in all and the view at the top is well worth it.

pool

Lounge by the pool. I’ve never really been one for pools but The Graham may have just changed my mind. I think the inner tube may have something to do with it. There is also a hammock near the pool. A coveted spot for sure!

Eat

Diner

Our first night, we headed north on Rt. 28 to Big Indian, home of Peekamoose Restaurant. By far, my favorite meal of the trip. Housed in an old country farmhouse, their menu changes daily to incorporate the freshest ingredients available. I enjoyed their chopped salad and ricotta gnudi {almost as good as The Spotted Pig}. My favorite part? The fire pit outside where you can roast marshmallows. A perfect after dinner treat!

After a good night’s sleep in the mountain air,  we took a quick car ride to the famous Phoenicia Diner. A classic diner worth all the hype. The breakfast skillets were delicious!

For our last night in The Catskills, we traveled to Woodstock for dinner at Cucina, which I must admit was a huge disappointment. Thank goodness, we did a little pre-game at Tinker Taco Lab. Their chorizo and potato taco hit the spot. While exploring downtown Woodstock, I noted several places we should have gone. Shindig, Garden Cafe and Yum Yum Noodle Bar.

All in all, we had a great trip {see all our vacation photos on Instagram using the #mrktvaca}. Next time, I think we’ll stay at Hotel Dylan {the band suite looks pretty amazing} as Woodstock has much more to offer than Phoenicia. And we are definitely visiting a swimming hole! A 3 hour drive from Boston and 2 hour drive from NYC, I can certainly see why The Catskills are a go-to vacation spot. Catskills vs. Hamptons, though? I have to say I’ll always take the beach!

Ten Things

IMG_0914

Why hello there! I thought today I would take the time to share a few tidbits that you probably don’t know about me.

* My first highway driving experience was at the ripe old age of 24. It was up to Maine for my dear friend Stacy’s {whose birthday is today} bridal shower. I was gripping the wheel so tight, I had hand cramps for hours.

* I don’t have my ears pierced. Thank goodness for screw back earrings. I scour eBay and vintage stores to add to my {growing} collection.

* I’m a 13th generation Nantucketer on my father’s side {dating back to Tristam Coffin, the first English settler on island} and 12th on my mother’s {decendents of Edward Cartwright hailing from England who moved to the island in 1673 from Maine to help teach the ins and outs of cod fishing}. My great, great-grandfather, Archibald Cartwright, is said to be the last whale captain of Nantucket.

* For such a foodie, I sure am one picky eater. No mushrooms, lobster, clams or ground beef for me {but I will gladly take a hot dog if no vegetarian option is available}.

* I’m a purist at heart. Given the choice of 50 ice cream flavors, I’ll always chose vanilla.

* I hate nuts in my baked goods {unless it’s a sconset cookies from The Sconset Market. My only exception}!

* I am known to start at least 3 side projects before heading to work in the morning. I really don’t like doing household chores {besides cooking} when I get home.

* I still travel with my blue stuffed animal dinosaur Dino. A gift from my Mom in 1988.

* I’ve been to 31 out of our 50 states. High on my wanderlust list are Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

* I don’t have a middle name.

 There you have it… did any of these surprise you? Stay cool today, friends. It’s hot out there!

Wow, it seems like just yesterday I was enjoying those strawberry crostini as I checked the first item off my Summer 2014 Bucket List. How the time does fly! A lot has certainly changed over this past year. I moved off the island, started a new job, fell in-love, traveled near and {not so} far and while my life has been filled with so much joy, the one thing I have certainly missed is this little blog of mine. So, a year later I start again. I look forward to you joining me for the ride. And, should you want to see the snapshots of this past year, check out my Instagram feed. As you will see, I have been quite busy #inthekitchenwithmay, which means lots of yummy recipe posts to come. I’ll see you back here tomorrow!
