Movie Monday

stuck in love
Thought it was about time to bring back one of my favorite columns… Movie Monday. And I have my dear friend JohnJohn (and this weekend’s storm) to thank for today’s movie pick. Stuck in Love.

I will be honest. Judging on title alone, I would have passed on this one but I am so grateful I didn’t. This delightful little film traces the story of a family : John and Erika Borgens (played by Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connolly) who have separated but still seem to love one another; Sam, the promiscuous daughter (played by Lily Collins) who has just received news that her manuscript will be published and Rusty, the loving son (played by Nat Wolff) who is a bit awkward and looking for self and love himself.

Greg Kinnear’s character is an accomplished novelist and thus his dialogue weaves in excerpts from some of his favorite works. The one that stuck with me most is the following: “I’m not sure what it is that compels a person to continue to play make-believe even after they are an adult. My favorite book is a collection of short stories by Raymond Carver, called “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.” And in the closing line of the title story, Carver says, “I could hear my heart beating. I could hear everyone’s heart. I could hear the human noise we sat there making. Not one of us moved. Not even when the room went dark.” And I think, that is what writing is. It’s listening for that beating heart and when we heard it. It’s your job to decipher it to the best of our abilities.”

This movie reminded me of what it takes to make any relationship, whether parent/child, sibling, or lover, work. If you are looking for an easy, not-too-complicated plot line, I’d highly recommend Stuck in Love. Will restore your faith in relationships too, I promise!

My King

King of Hearts
One of the many joys of island life is having wonderful friends come and visit. A few weeks back, I was able to spend a delightful morning with my dear friend R visiting from D.C. I really do have some talented friends. She was telling me all about this new podcast series she is working on with two of her friends down in the district “Ten Questions we Always Ask.” So what ten questions do they always ask? Well, you will just have to tund into the podcasts (available on iTunes) to find out.

Ok, fine. I will share just one with you. The questions is “what can you always be found with?” Let’s see… I always have my planner, a book, my journal, my favorite pen, my iPod and my king of hearts card. Yes, you read that right. My king of hearts card.

Since my divorce, I indulge in a yearly card reading. Why you ask? One of my greatest fears is that I will end up alone. I know, I know… I shouldn’t think such things but I do. So the one question I return to again and again (as he always ask, “is there something you want to focus on?”) is “will I find my great love/partner?” And you know, the card I have pulled more times than not is the king of cups. Lucky for me, there are few cards that are more loving than the king of cups, which indicates that someone who is very balanced and loving will enter your life in the future. Hope.

So how does the king of cups translate to my king of hearts card. Well, let me tell you. It all goes back to that wonderful series Sex and the City. I think it was a February night when I was siting in my apartment at 263 watching an old episode (season 6, episode 7 to be precise) when I realized, oh my god, my ex is Berger. Now don’t worry, he didn’t break up with me on a post-it note but the similarities are quite strong. Berger’s one redeeming quality was his quirky hobby of collecting playing cards found in the street. So I thought… I want to do this. And as you can guess, the first card I found was the king of hearts. My past leading me to my future? Yes, that is exactly how I see it!

And there you have it… the things I will always be found with. Be sure to tune into this bi-monthly podcast. I promise you will be well entertained.

Movie Monday

Before Midnight
I think I have said this before but I am a true romantic and thus a sucker for a beautiful love story. The Before Sunrise trilogy, which I was just recently introduced to, may just be my favorite. If you aren’t familiar with these movies, please allow me a brief introduction.

The first movie Before Sunrise premiered in 1995 and introduced the world to Jesse and Celine, an American boy and a French girl, who have a chance meeting on a train and decide to disembark in Vienna, unplanned of course, and spend an evening together exploring the city and their new friendship. The film ends with Jesse and Celine at the train station making a plan to visit each other in the same spot six months later. Will they meet again?

Fast forward to 2004, Before Sunset. Jesse is in Paris promoting his recent novel about an evening encounter that turns into love (a work of fiction, of course). Through the crowd at the Shakespearean Book Company, where the reading takes place, Jesse catches eyes with Celine. They spend the afternoon walking Paris, similar to their time in Vienna, discussing life and the years lost. We learn that Jesse did indeed travel to Vienna to meet Celine. They share stories of their current relationships, their jobs and the love they still share for each other. The film ends with Jesse and Celine at her apartment. Will Jesse leave and get on the plane back to his wife and son?

Nine years later, we get our answer. Before Midnight begins with Jesse and Celine together in Greece with their two beautiful girls. Did true love prevail? You will just have to watch these films to find out!

These films show us the poetry of everyday life… how the simple choices we make can change our lives forever. Would you get off the train to spend an afternoon with someone you just met? Would you fight for the one who got away? My answer is emphatically YES! I will share more of my own “before sunrise” story later this week but let me leave you with this beautiful thought… “You can never replace anyone because everyone is made of such beautiful, specific details.” Embrace the wrong ones that got away. Don’t try to forget them. They lead you to what really matters. And as a sweet lady told me last week, “Remember, Maybeth… it only take’s one.”

Island Cocktails

IMG_3359
Not quite sure how but my little brother is 21 today. And since I am quite certain he hasn’t taken to the island nightlife quite like his older sister(s) (wink, wink), I thought I would share with him, and all of you, some of my favorite island spirits.

IMG_3204
The Goombay Smash – One of the finest rum punches at one of the best, Straight Wharf. But a word to the wise, these things go down a bit too easy so take caution.

IMG_2415
The Crucomber
My summer pick! I suggest one slight modification… ask the bartenders at Cru to use Hendrick’s gin instead of the Zubrowka vodka.

IMG_3203
Mudslide
The Gazebo’s dessert in a glass with a little kick… love it!

Last summer’s cocktail of choice was Ivy’s Poison at Dune. Sadly, I don’t have a photo to show you just how beautiful this cocktail is but let me describe it for you… muddled strawberries and mint, rose and St. Germain. Heaven in a glass is exactly right!

Just a few more contenders include The Proprietor’s Number 4; Slip 14’s The Berry SEXY, and the Madaket Mystery at Millie’s.

I am a firm believer that every home needs a house cocktail. Mine is quite simple: Izzy’s sparking grapefruit mixed in equal parts with Cisco’s Triple Eight blueberry vodka. My favorite party trick is to get the glass bottles of Izzy, empty out half of the grapefruit deliciousness into a pitcher (easy to refill later) and pour the blueberry vodka right into the glass bottle. Top it with a straw and you will impress your guests upon arrival. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

In the Air

IMG_3370
I love these summer nights when you can smell the change of season on its way. And today, after finally having a moment to check my mail, I received a wonderful surprise… a $75 rewards card from J.Crew. Guess I will be starting my fall shopping now.

Just a few items currently in my shopping bag:

– The perfect flannel boyfriend shirt. Thinking I will pair this with some black skinnies and ballet flats.
– My closet is filled with light, airy blouses and this little gingham number will be the perfect addition.
– I have a feeling I am going to be living in this cashmere sweater!
– After giving up my corporate gig last year, I made the mistake of giving away all my suits, which means I no longer have that little black blazer to dress up an outfit. Think I may have just found a replacement with this one.
– I have been lusting after the Rag & Bone booties for quite some time sadly don’t have the funds at the moment to splurge so I think these are the perfect compromise!
– I have been spending some restless nights thinking of where to travel this winter. At least I can decide on my new passport cover.

And to answer the question, the best thing(s) about fall in my opinion include (in no particular order) apple picking, cider donuts, cozy sweaters, the air, football games, shorter days, and less traffic around the island!

Movie Monday

the-way-way-back-poster-405x6001
There are a handful of movies I can watch again and again – Pretty in Pink, The Holiday, Away We Go, Kissing Jessica Stein and now I have a new one to add… The Way, Way Back.

While in Boston yesterday, I decided to indulge in one of my favorite Sunday afternoon city activities. That’s right, an afternoon movie at Kendall Square Theatre. And aren’t I glad I did. This film, featuring some of my favorite actors (Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Amanda Peet, Maya Rudolph and Allison Janey) tells the story of Duncan (played by Liam James), who is just trying to find his way after his parents divorce, a feeling many of us can relate to, I’m sure.

The setting for the movie is a small Cape Cod town, Wareham to be precise. While I could go on and on about the expert script written by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, the heart-wrenching relationship between mother and son, and the introduction of one of the funniest characters written in quite some time, Owen (played by Sam Rockwell), I will just say, you must go see this film. And as an added bonus, the soundtrack is brilliant and features one of my old favorites, Edie Brickell. Take a listen.

The Way, Way Back has my vote for best movie of the summer, hands down!

Dance All Night

Have I told you all about my brother, Travis. Not only is he one of the nicest guys you will meet (with perhaps the smallest waist in the family), he is the fearless leader behind Miss Fairchild, one of the hippest bands out of Boston. And lucky for me and any of you on island time, they are playing at The Box tonight. Can’t wait to dance all night!

If I don’t see you on the dance floor tonight please promise me you will give them a listen. A little Prince vibe, mixed with some JT and Sly and the Family Stone, Miss Fairchild provides music that will pick you up when ever you are feeling a little down. So very proud of you, Travis!

Movie Monday – NFF18

Blood Brother
What a festival! I always love walking around and feeling the buzz of creative and artistic minds on this little island. As I mentioned in last week’s post, the Nantucket Film Festival kicked off last Wednesday and ended today with the ”Audience Award” viewing of Life According to Sam and “Best of Fest” Twenty Feet from Stardom.

In total, I saw four films and I loved 3 out of 4. Not bad. I started out with Blood Brother on Wednesday night. This film tells the heartbreaking and inspiring story of Rocky Braat, a 20-something Pittsburgh male who leaves the states in search of self in India. During his early travels, he visited a center that served as an orphanage, refuge, school and care center for children with HIV. At this center, Rocky found home. The faces of the children will stay with you long after the film. A must see, in my book!

Some Girls
Next up Some Girl(s). I so wanted to love this film. And I so didn’t. The main character, played by Adam Brody, is never introduced to the audience by name, which I guess in the end is a good thing because he truly is one of the least likable characters I have seen in a film in a while. And the funny thing is, he isn’t suppose to be the bad guy. The film is about an author who is about to get married so he embarks on a nationwide tour to meet with some of his ex’s who he feels he still has some unresolved issues with. But these encounters, all in hotel rooms (strange) turn out to leave the women with even more unanswered questions. If you want to see a movie that will make you loathe the idea of relationships or that people can grown and change, I guess I would recommend this to you.

Drinking Buddies
Since I clearly needed a cocktail after Thursday’s movie, Friday’s choice was perfect… Drinking Buddies. Loved, loved, loved this film. And I promise it wasn’t just because my all-time favorite guy, Jake Johnson (Nick Miller – New Girl) starred in it. It was just a feel good movie that made me realize that good guys do in-fact exist. And much of the film takes place at a brewery… win/win. Looking for a light-hearted movie to watch with that special guy in your life, rent this!

And lastly, I closed out my NFF 18 viewing experience with A.C.O.D (A Child of Divorce). And since I am a child of divorce, I found this film to be hysterical. And if you love Parks and Rec, you will be happy to know that both Adam Scott and Amy Poehler star in this film. Another must!

Now don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year’s festival – June 25-30, 2014. My countdown has already begun!

So Damn Lucky

DMB Poster

I remember the first time I heard Dave… it was the summer of 1995 and I was working at The Nantucket Bake Shop. Some of my fellow counter hands were a bit older (I may have had a crush on the one from Johns Hopkins) and they were obsessed with the “Under the Table and Dreaming” album, which ignited mine. I could have listed to Ants Marching a thousand times that summer. I am told they played a show or two at The Muse but sadly I was a tad young for admission. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and this past Sunday I finally was able to see this band, that was part of so many memories, live. First love, first break-up, true love, summer parties, college parties… so many milestones can be summed up with a lyric from a DMB song.

And what a show it was! I’ve always said Dave would be my celebrity “free pass” and after seeing him with that guitar, I am even more adamant about that sentiment. Boyd Tinsley on the violin might be a close second. I thought it would be fun to put together my favorite Dave songs for all of you.

– #41
– You and Me
– Stay or Leave
– Crash into Me
– Grey Street
– The Idea of You
– If Only
– Jimmy Thing
– Lover Lay Down
– One Sweet World
– Say Goodbye
– Crush
– Stay (Wasting Time)
– Steady as We Go
– Typical Situation
– Warehouse
– The Christmas Song
– So Damn Lucky

Any that I’ve missed? Can’t wait to see what the band does next!

PS – I know the poster is from last year’s show at The Comcast Center but had the hardest time trying to find the 2013 version.
